Different types of Essays

The word essay is accorded with lots of meaning, and it is easy to get confused. According to Google Dictionary, “it is a short piece of writing on a particular subject.And has synonyms such as article, composition, study, paper, dissertation, thesis, discourse, treatise, disquisition, monograph; commentary, critique, and theme.” (“Google”, 2016) But what are the types of essays which are well known and recognized in academic writing? Let’s explore.

  1. Narrative Essay: this is an essay that involves telling a story, and this is normally about a real life experience. It is a good way for one to be creative and talk about themselves.
  2. Descriptive Essay: just as the name suggests it is a type of essay that describes something. It gives a glimpse of a person or an object while using words. This kind of essay always carries a lot of meaning.
  3. Persuasive Essays: it is an article meant to convince someone into doing anything or about an idea. It describes in details the effects and usually starts with a short story of a similar situation that one is to be persuaded towards or against.
  4. Expository Essays: I can describe this essay as being formal. The reason being it is based on an in-depth detail of a topic using facts and examples to support the ideas on the paper. This list is not exhaustive of all kinds of essays there are other forms which we will discuss on another post.
